Moonscape


To prepare for the Apollo landings, five Lunar Orbiter spacecraft were launched during 1966 and 1967 to gather detailed images of our fair planet's large, natural satellite. Dramatic views returned by the spacecraft cameras included this stark moonscape. The mosaic of the 93 kilometer-wide, or 50 mile-wide impact crater, Copernicus features central peaks rising above the crater floor and rugged crater walls.

Endeavour


The opening drag chute slowed Endeavour as it landed on runway 15 at NASA's Kennedy Space Center. The Endeavour crew, led by Commander Scott Kelly, completed a 13-day mission to the International Space Station. The STS-118 mission began Aug. 8 and installed a new gyroscope, an external spare parts platform and another truss segment to the expanding station. Endeavour's main gear touched down at 12:32 EDT, on Aug. 21, 2007, after traveling more than 5 million miles.

Flight Deck


PACIFIC OCEAN (Aug. 18, 2007) - Aviation Ordnanceman 3rd Class Roger Sparks signals for a HH-60H Seahawk, attached to the "Eightballers" of Helicopter Anti-Submarine Squadron (HS) 8, to lift up from the loading area of the flight deck of Nimitz-class aircraft carrier USS John C. Stennis (CVN 74). Stennis is transferring ammunition to the Military Sealift Command ammunition ship USNS Flint (T-AE 32) during a weapons off-load. Stennis, and Carrier Air Wing 9, as part of the John C. Stennis Carrier Strike Group, are on a regularly scheduled deployment to promote peace, regional cooperation and stability.

USS Halsey


PACIFIC OCEAN (Aug. 11, 2007) - Arleigh Burke-class guided missile destroyer USS Halsey (DDG 97) arrives alongside Nimitz-class aircraft carrier USS Abraham Lincoln (CVN 72) during a fueling at sea (FAS). Lincoln and embarked Carrier Air Wing (CVW) 2 are underway off the coast of Southern California conducting a Tailored Ship's Training Availability (TSTA).

USS John C. Stennis


PACIFIC OCEAN (Aug. 10, 2007) - An SH-60F Seahawk assigned to the "Eightballers" of Helicopter Anti-Submarine Squadron (HS) 8, attached to Carrier Air Wing (CVW) 9, hovers near the Nimitz-class aircraft carrier USS John C. Stennis (CVN 74) acting as plane guard during exercise Valiant Shield 2007. A plane guard is in the air during flight operations to respond in the event of a man overboard or aircraft incident. The John C. Stennis, Kitty Hawk and Nimitz Carrier Strike Groups are participating in Valiant Shield, the largest joint exercise in recent history. Held in the Guam operating area, the exercise includes 30 ships, more than 280 aircraft and more than 20,000 service members from the Navy, Air Force, Marine Corps, and Coast Guard.

F-18 Landing


PACIFIC OCEAN (Aug. 8, 2007) - An F/A-18C Hornet from the "Death Rattlers" of Marine Fighter Attack Squadron (VMFA) 323, assigned to Carrier Air Wing (CVW) 9, lands on the flight deck of the Nimitz-class aircraft carrier USS John C. Stennis (CVN 74). The John C. Stennis, Kitty Hawk and Nimitz Carrier Strike Groups are participating in Valiant Shield 2007, the largest joint exercise in recent history. Held in the Guam operating area, the exercise includes 30 ships, more than 280 aircraft and more than 20,000 service members from the Navy, Air Force, Marine Corps, and Coast Guard.

Blue Angels


SEATTLE (Aug. 3, 2007) -The U.S. Navy flight demonstration team, "Blue Angels," perform their delta formation during a 2007 Seattle Seafair event. The Blue Angels fly the F/A-18A Hornet, performing approximately 30 maneuvers during the aerial demonstration lasting over an hour. Seafair is Seattle's month-long traditional summer festival, which includes parades, amateur athletics, air shows and boat racing.

ATLANTIC OCEAN (June 24, 2007) - Guided-missile cruiser USS Vicksburg (CG 69) takes part in a boarding scenario training exercise while transiting the Atlantic Ocean. Vicksburg is underway in preparation for an upcoming deployment.

ATLANTIC OCEAN (Aug. 1, 2007) - An F/A-18C Hornet assigned to the "Wildcats" of Strike Fighter Squadron (VFA) 131 breaks the sound barrier during an aerial demonstration for the Sailors aboard the Nimitz-class aircraft carrier USS Dwight D. Eisenhower (CVN 69). Eisenhower is currently underway in the Atlantic Ocean.

Lawrence Clousing


In this 1948 photograph, test pilot Lawrence Clousing climbs into his Lockheed P-80 aircraft for a test flight at the Ames Aeronautical Laboratory, Moffett Field, Calif. Clousing was a test pilot for NASA's precursor the National Advisory Committee for Aeronautics or NACA.
