F/A-18E Super Hornet


An F/A-18E Super Hornet, assigned to the "Kestrels" of Strike Fighter Squadron (VFA) 137, launches from Nimitz-class aircraft carrier USS Abraham Lincoln (CVN 72). Lincoln and embarked Carrier Air Wing (CVW) 2 are participating in Composite Training Unit Exercise off the coast of Southern California.

MV-22 Osprey on deck


STRAITS ON TIRAN (Oct. 3, 2007) - Lights on the flight deck of the multipurpose amphibious assault ship USS Wasp (LHD 1) illuminate a MV-22 Ospreys attached to Marine Medium Tilt-rotor Squadron (VMM) 263 as it transits the Straits of Tiran. Wasp is on a surge deployment bringing the Osprey on its first combat deployment to the Middle East.

USS Essex


SASEBO, Japan (Sept. 12, 2007) - Sailors assigned to deck department aboard amphibious assault ship USS Essex (LHD 2) paint the ship’s hull during a selective restrictive availability maintenance. Essex, the Navy's only permanently forward deployed amphibious assault ship, is the flagship for the Sasebo, Japan-based Essex Expeditionary Strike Group, which serves under Commander, Task Force 76.

F-16 Falcon vs. XJR15 Jaguar!


An F-16 Fighting Falcon, one of the Air Force's most powerful single-engine fighters, races an XJR15 Jaguar down a one-mile stretch of runway Sept. 29 at Nellis Air Force Base, Nev. The F-16 won the race, one of three special events held during the two-day Nellis Autocross.

Vanguard Missle Explosion


The U.S. Navy's test of Vanguard rocket, along with its satellite payload, went hopelessly awry when the rocket failed to develop sufficient thrust and toppled over on the launch pad. The malfunctioning first stage caused vehicle to lose thrust after two seconds.

The Dec. 6, 1957 launch was slated for the U.S. International Geophysical Year program to place satellite in Earth orbit to determine atmospheric density and conduct geodetic measurements.

F/A-18C Hornet and E-2C Hawkeye


SAN DIEGO (Sept. 29, 2007) - An F/A-18C Hornet, F/A-18F Super Hornet and E-2C Hawkeye fly over the San Antonio-class amphibious transport dock USS New Orleans (LPD 18) during the city’s Sea and Air Parade. The annual event, which is part of the month-long Fleet Week celebration, featured a parade of ships through San Diego Bay and flybys from Navy, Marine Corps and Coast Guard aircraft.
