F/A 18C Hornet Carrier Crew

PACIFIC OCEAN (Oct. 26, 2010) Final checkers ensure an F/A 18C Hornet assigned to the Dambusters of Strike Fighter Squadron (VFA) 195 is in position before allowing it to launch from the aircraft carrier USS George Washington (CVN 73). This is the final time the Dambusters will fly off the flight deck of George Washington before transitioning to a Super Hornet airframe. Marines

Marines and Sailors of the 31st Marine Expeditionary Unit and Amphibious Squadron 11, board CH-46E Sea Knight helicopters to fly from the USS Essex (LHD 2) to storm-ravaged areas of the northern Philippines to assist the government with an initial survey of damage and assessment of local populace needs, Oct. 21. The 31st MEU and PHIBRON-11 are joining with the Armed Forces of the Philippines as well as the U.S. Agency for International Development to survey villages that have been isolated since Super Typhoon Juan struck. The ships of the Essex Amphibious Ready Group, the USS Essex, USS Denver (LPD 9) and USS Harpers Ferry (LSD 49) have been positioned close to Northern Luzon to be available for assistance as needed.

KAJAKI, Afghanistan – Camped out aboard Outpost Athens West, Lance Cpl. Kevin Sullivan, an artilleryman with India Battery, 3rd Battalion, 12th Marine Regiment, Regimental Combat Team 2, peers through his newly acquired Nokia “Big Eye” binoculars. Seeing over one of the highest points in Kajaki, the binoculars, capable of 120 power magnification, will help Marines at OP Athens West see what is going on below. “They will be able to see the action in our [area of operations] with greater clarity giving them the ability to get positive identification at greater ranges,” said Capt. Thomas Kearns, executive officer of India Battery, 3rd Bn., 12th Marines.
